Belgian AI startup raises substantial investment

Herk-de-Stad / Limburg an der Lahn – Belgian company Rematics has raised a strategic investment of 2 million euros from the German technology group MOBA. With this, Rematics takes a significant step in the international scaling of its AI technology for data-driven and safer waste collection.

Rematics, founded in 2023, develops AI-driven end-to-end solutions that automatically and in real-time recognize waste fractions, waste stream contaminations, and hazardous materials during waste collection. “This investment and collaboration is an important milestone,” opens Bram Peetermans, CEO of Rematics. “MOBA possesses a strong international market position and in-depth expertise across numerous sectors. Together, we can accelerate the scale-up and rollout of our technology and further transform waste collection from an operational process into a data-driven ecosystem.”

Rapid growth

The idea to apply AI to waste originated within Valipac, the Belgian producer responsibility organization for commercial packaging. After an initial test phase and proof-of-concept in collaboration with partner ACA Group, Valipac decided to sell the project. To commercialize the idea, ACA Group and MyCSN (Nuhma) subsequently founded Rematics together with Bram Peetermans. As a result, the first live cases were rolled out by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, established names such as Limburg.net, Remondis, Gielen, Afval Alternatief, and Milieu Service Nederland are part of the client portfolio. This rapid growth did not go unnoticed by MOBA.

The waste sector is evolving at breakneck speed towards a data-driven, circular economy. Stricter regulations and the need to save more recyclable material from incineration call for smarter solutions. By linking Rematics’ AI technology to existing platforms, we are adding a powerful new layer of intelligence to accelerate this transformation. The Rematics team remains responsible for “The further development of its products, sales, and implementations in the Benelux; we take care of everything outside of that. We are very proud to welcome this unique technology player to the MOBA Group,” says Volker Harms, CEO of MOBA.

Less than 4 hours

Rematics’ solution, also known as Daisy4Truck or D4T, is mounted on a garbage truck in less than 4 hours and consists of a camera, lighting, and an AI device. “Waste streams are automatically analyzed, non-conformities are detected, and hazardous materials such as batteries, gas cylinders, or fire extinguishers are recognized early. This provides waste companies, intermunicipal associations, and local authorities with objective data on sorting behavior and contamination. The combination of real-time detection and data-driven AI insights ensures safer, more efficient, and more controllable waste collection. We are currently receiving requests from the UK to Singapore. Together with MOBA, we are therefore fully prepared to make the world a little smarter and more sustainable,” concludes Peetermans with ambition.
